It took an Argentinian to go to Panama and rescue calypso music. That was the conclusion after Fernando Muñoz's Una noche de calypso premiered at the Panama International Film Festival earlier this month. The music documentary, which is part history lesson and part concert, is a full-on celebration of this genre of Afro-Caribbean music: it's Panama's own spin on The Buena Vista Social Club, only with more steel drums and ukuleles. Following Leslie, Monchi, Ringing Bell, Palmer, Víctor and Edward, members of Grupo Amistad as they prepare to perform, A Night of Calypso takes viewers on a journey through how Panamanian calypso originated. As sociologist Gerardo Maloney says in the film, "Calypso is true, it describes events, situations and identifies people who were important to the African people."
While sharing a Q&A after the film, Muñoz was fascinated by this recognizable music and immediately wanted to learn more about it. “The calypso genre is really beautiful and has a great history. As soon as you delve into it, you end up more enthralled with it. The story is immense,” he shared, “this is just a fragment of it.” In interviews with members of Grupo Amistad, as well as leading Trinidad-born scholars of the genre, Muñoz's documentarian hopes to see the musical styles of calypso return to the mainstream. The musical artists featured in the documentary who attended the IFF Panama premiere were quick to thank Muñoz for highlighting his work; In all honesty, as they confessed, they feared the film would never be finished, much less shown!
The documentary was so successful at the festival that it won the K Magazine People's Choice Award for best documentary film. And although he has no commercial commitments yet, the entire team was excited to see that he was received so warmly that we hope that changes very soon. Check out the trailer for the doc below.
