Tracing Birds in Isolation is a hand processed and printed 16mm film that starts somewhere resembling a traditional field study of sea birds then ascends through the color spectrum into a psychedelic technicolor frenzy of flying forms, that swoop and glide as their abstracted forms merge into one another and reemerge into the saturated skies.
The birds were filmed over a one year period soaring above the high cliff tops of the windy North East coast of England. The black and white originals were then transformed through experiments in contact printing and colour processing. By printing the source film into positive and negative masks, the coloured layers were printed individually through different coloured gels to build multiple, mirrored and staggered images that pulse and flow to the rhythmic drones of an original Culver score.
Chris Bate and Sarah Bouttell are long-term collaborators in the production of film, photography and audio work. Their practice is driven by an interest in the craft of filmmaking and sound recording, the use of fading technologies and experimental processes. They are also founding members of Film Bee, a filmmaking cooperative and lab based in Newcastle upon Tyne at the Star & Shadow cinema. Film Bee is made up of individuals who have an interest in using celluloid and photo-chemical processes in an experimental way, and developing a DIY environment for sharing resources and making films together.
