Dimitri Sanin, a young Russian, stops off in a German town on his way home from Italy. He saves a boy's life. He falls in love with the beautiful Gemma, the daughter of a confectioner. Dimitri spends a few days with Gemma's family. Gemma is already engaged to a German, Mr. Klüber. An incident occurs during an excursion. A drunken officer insults Gemma and Dimitri challenges him to a duel, which ends without bloodshed. Gemma breaks off her engagement and wants to marry Dimitri. Dimitri meets his old friend Polosov on the street, who is taking a cure nearby with his rich wife. Polosov's attractive wife Marja is interested in buying Dimitri's property in Russia, but asks for two days to think it over. During this time, she makes herself subservient to Dimitri. He falls for her, abandons Gemma and goes to Paris with Marja and Polosow.
