As a guest of the Duke of Ferrara and his sister Leonore, the poet Torquato Tasso lives in their pleasure palace in order to complete his heroic poem "The Liberated Jerusalem". At this time, the urbane Secretary of State Antonio returns from a diplomatic assignment. He describes life in Rome and praises the poet Ariosto, which offends the sensitive Tasso. In a later argument, Tasso even draws his sword against Antonio and is imprisoned in his room by the duke for his carelessness. Antonio feels no enmity for Tasso, but the latter is full of mistrust and makes serious accusations against court life, which he wants to leave as soon as possible. As he takes his leave, he embraces Leonore, but is pushed back. Tasso, unable to cope with his earthly torment, finds a comforting friend in Antonio.
